Unfolding is built on a simple principle: your inner life is yours. We collect only what we need to provide the service, we never sell your data, and we give you full control over what you share.
What We Collect
Content You Create
Your reflections, goals, journal entries, and any media you upload. This is the heart of the app and is stored securely to sync across your devices.
Account Information
If you create an account: your email address and display name. You can use the app anonymously without providing any personal information.
Usage Data
Basic analytics to improve the app: which features you use, crash reports, and performance metrics. This data is anonymized and never linked to your content.
AI Processing
Unfolding uses AI (powered by Anthropic's Claude) to help extract priorities from your reflections and suggest thoughtful follow-up questions.
- Your reflections are sent to the AI only when you explicitly use these features
- AI processing happens through secure, encrypted connections
- Your data is not used to train AI models
- Anthropic does not store your data after processing
- You can use the app without AI features if you prefer
Regional Consent (GDPR Compliance)
If you're located in the European Union, European Economic Area, United Kingdom, or Switzerland, we ask for your explicit consent before sending your reflections to the AI for processing. This consent prompt explains:
- What data will be sent (your reflection text)
- How the AI will process it (to identify priorities and themes)
- Your privacy protections (not stored, not used for training)
You can decline AI processing and add your priorities manually instead. If you go back to edit your reflection after consenting, we'll ask for your consent again since the content may have changed.
Third-Party Services
We use the following services to operate Unfolding:
- Firebase (Google) — Authentication, data storage, and file hosting
- Anthropic — AI processing for priority extraction
- Apple/Google Sign-In — Optional authentication providers
Each service has its own privacy policy. We only share the minimum data necessary for these services to function.
Data Security
- All data is encrypted in transit (HTTPS/TLS)
- Data is stored on secure, encrypted servers
- We use industry-standard security practices
- Access to user data is strictly limited to essential operations
Your Rights
You have full control over your data:
- Access — Export all your data at any time from Settings
- Correction — Edit or update any content you've created
- Deletion — Delete your account and all associated data permanently
- Portability — Download your data in a standard format

Data Retention
We keep your data for as long as you have an account. If you delete your account, all your data is permanently removed within 30 days. Anonymous usage data may be retained in aggregate form for analytics purposes.
Children's Privacy
Unfolding is not intended for children under 13. We do not knowingly collect data from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us immediately.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy occasionally. Significant changes will be communicated through the app or email. Continued use after changes constitutes acceptance.
